Bike trip along the trails of medieval knights
Enrich an active day by discovering medieval castles and interesting legends.
The route includes the following settlements: Postojna-Planina-Lohača-Strmca-Studeno-Belsko-Bukovje-Predjama-Landol-Šmihel pod Nanosom-Dilce-Hruševje-Sajevče-Rakulik-Orehek-Prestranek-Grobišče-Postojna.
The trip starts in Postojna at Hotel Center, which is the starting point for bike trips that take you along the path of medieval knights. On this trail, which takes you through numerous small villages and past churches, you will encounter three medieval castles: Prestranek Castle, Orehek Castle and Predjama Castle; the ruins of the once mighty baroque Haasberg Castle and the Ravbar Tower, the preserved remain of the former Little Castle. Make a stop on the Planina Field along the way, where you will find the entrance to the Planina Cave, the largest water cave in Slovenia, hidden under a tall sheer rock cliff. The Cave features large underground halls, multiple lakes, beautiful dripstones and the largest confluence of subterranean rivers in Europe. You can spice up your trip with a visit to the Adventure Park in Postojna, a one-hour hike to Sv. Lovrenc above Studeno, a visit to the “At the Old Lady” museum collections in the village of Predjama, admire the statue of the Postojna Cave dragon and Jacob the shepherd boy in the village of Šmihel pod Nanosom or by watching the horse trainers at the Prestranek Castle Estate. The bike trail is marked, it is 57 km long and is suitable for more able bikers. A bike guidebook and map are available.
